What to Wear This Month: Six November Outfits for Rain and Cold

November mixes cold snaps, rain and wind, so the coat matters more than what is under it. Six outfits follow, each built from pieces most closets already hold. Pick the outerwear for the day’s forecast, then fill in the rest.

The weather to dress for

Cold spells are common in November, and the month can bring anything from light rain to full showers. For cold days, a warm insulated coat or parka works, with sweaters or turtlenecks over base layers. Corduroys or lined jeans and warm socks round it out. For wet days, a water-resistant trench or raincoat keeps you dry.

Looking ahead, NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center favors warmer-than-normal temperatures for December 2026 through February 2027 across much of the northern U.S. That is a probability outlook, not a forecast for any single day. It also says much of the southern tier and the East Coast is likely to be wetter than normal, so a rain-ready coat stays useful.

Six outfits from common pieces

1. Trench, trousers and ballet flats

A classic trench over smart trousers and ballet flats suits the office. It works in most weather and looks put together whatever sits underneath. A belted, water-repellent style handles rain.

2. Suede jacket, knit and jeans

This is an easy weekend formula. Pick a knit in a neutral or brown tone, and keep the jacket dry, since suede is the one piece here that rain can spoil.

3. Wool coat, crewneck and sneakers

A tailored coat makes sneakers look dressed up. Wear a fitted crewneck, cropped straight jeans or ankle trousers, and white or gray leather sneakers. Choose a camel or navy coat that falls below the knee. Show your ankles only on mild days. Otherwise wear crew socks in a matching color.

4. Long-sleeve midi dress and ankle boots

A long-sleeve printed midi can stay in rotation all month. Choose a muted floral, geometric or abstract print. Add opaque tights and block-heel ankle boots for warmth and stability on wet pavement.

5. Pinstripe blazer and straight-leg jeans

Mid-blue straight-leg jeans can go smart. Add a slightly oversized navy pinstripe blazer, a dark leather belt and pointed flats. A bright bag gives the look a focal point.

6. Leather jacket and maxi skirt

A maxi skirt needs structure once the weather cools. A cropped leather jacket supplies it. Boots and a knit underneath finish the outfit.

Fabric and styling notes

  • Treat scarves, gloves and hats as the adjustable layer. They add warmth and come off in seconds.
  • November is usually too mild for heavy scarves. A lightweight silk or cotton scarf, draped loosely or knotted at the side, adds color to a plain outfit.
  • Fleece-lined leggings are a sensible base for long stretches outdoors, such as park walks or exercise.
  • Before buying anything, try these combinations with what you own. A summer slip skirt becomes a fall skirt with a sweater and boots.
